Chemical properties:
N-methylformamide pure product is colorless transparent viscous liquid, m.p.-3.8℃, b.p.198℃, n25D1.4310, relative density 0.9986(25℃), soluble in water, can also dissolve inorganic salts, has moisture absorption, easy to decompose in acidic or alkaline solutions.

Purpose:
N-methylformamide is an important organic chemical raw materials and intermediates, is a good performance of organic solvents, used for the synthesis of high efficiency and low toxicity of monomethylamine, dimethylamine, etc., it can be used as a reaction solvent and refining solvent for organic synthesis, but also widely used in medicine, dyes, spices and electrolysis, electroplating industry.

Production method
There are three main synthesis processes for N-methylformamide.
(1) Methylamine method
It is produced by the interaction of methylamine with carbon monoxide. CO+CH3NH2→HCONHCH3 feeds a mixture of monomethylamine 69.62% (mass fraction), methanol 29.87% (mass fraction) and sodium methanol 0.5% (mass fraction)(0.72% for monomethylamine) to the reactor for 87.05kg/h. At the same time, the content of carbon monoxide is 99.5% 56.5kg/h, the reaction temperature is 90℃, the pressure is 2.53MPa. The mixture containing monomethylamine 80.5% (mass fraction) is removed 140.75kg per hour, that is, the N-methylformamide generation is 113.4kg per hour, and the production capacity of the 1L reactor is 1.89 kgn-methylformamide per hour.
(2) methyl formate method
It is obtained by the reaction of methyl formate with methylamine. CH3NH2+HCOOCH3→HCONHCH3+CH3OH product was obtained by initial distillation and rectification, with a total yield of 90%. The product content is 95% ~ 99.5%.
(3) ethyl formate method
It is produced by the action of ethyl formate and methylamine. HCOOC2H5+CH3NH2→HCONHCH3+C2H5OH Ethyl formate was first added into the reaction tank, and then methylamine aqueous solution was added under cooling [ethyl formate and methylamine aqueous solution were mixed at 1:1.2 (mol)], and stirred at 40℃ by reflux, then placed for 3d, and ethanol was recovered under pressure. The crude product was distilled under pressure to obtain the finished product.
