About:
P-methoxyacetophenone is an aromatic compound with sweet, fruity, nutty and vanilla-like flavors. Also, p-methoxyacetophenone sometimes smells like butter or caramel. At room temperature, p-methoxyacetophenone is a solid with white yellowish crystals. When it melts, the white crystals turn into a transparent liquid. The compound is used as an additive in cigarettes, as a flavor, and in food flavoring. P-methoxyacetophenone is found naturally in castoreum (the glandular secretion of the beaver). P-methoxyacetophenone can be synthesized from anisole and acetyl chloride by a Fourier gram reaction.

Chemical properties:
Colorless or nearly colorless oily liquid that solidifies at slightly lower temperatures. Strong hawthorn aroma and fruity and floral, similar to acetophenone aroma. Boiling point 226℃, melting point -23℃, flash point 96℃. Soluble in ethanol and most non-volatile oils, slightly soluble in propylene glycol and mineral oil, insoluble in glycerol and water. Natural products are found in rosewood essential oil, mimosa flower oil, etc.

Production method:
It is prepared by acetylation of toluene and acetic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous aluminum trichloride. The dry toluene and powder anhydrous aluminum trichloride are added to the reaction pot, stirring and adding acetic anhydride, the temperature gradually rises to 90℃, the reaction emits a large amount of hydrogen chloride gas. React until no more hydrogen chloride gas is produced, cool to room temperature, pour into a mixture of crushed ice and concentrated hydrochloric acid, and stir until the aluminum salts dissolve. Separate the toluene layer, wash with water, wash with 10% sodium hydroxide solution to alkaline, and then wash with water. After drying with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, p-methylacetophenone was obtained by vacuum distillation and 93-94℃ (0.93kPa) fractions were collected. The yield was 86%. The improved method is to combine equal molar aluminum trichloride with acetyl chloride (or acetic anhydride) under heating, and then drop toluene dissolved in disulfide carbon into it. The yield by weight is 110% according to acetyl chloride.
